"It's not a gay song. The line "you can hang out with all the boys" was inspired by my youth, when I played basketball with my friends at the YMCA.'' - Victor Willis (co-writer)
"I wanted to write a song that could fit anyone's lifestyle. I'm happy the gay community adopted it as their anthem, I have no qualms with that." - Victor Willis (co-writer)
''I knew we had something special. Because it sounded like a commercial. And everyone likes commercials. "Y.M.C.A." certainly has a gay origin. That's what Jacques was thinking when he wrote it, because our first album was possibly the gayest album ever. I mean, look at us. We were a gay group. So was the song written to celebrate gay men at the YMCA? Yes. Absolutely. And gay people love it." - David Hodo

Glenn Hughes, the leather man,.and I were classmates at Chaminade High School Mineola ,NY We graduated together in the class of 1968. We were both in the glee club Glenn was a great singer even when he was only 16! I really had no singing voice but I tried. Unfortunately,Glenn died of lung cancer.I spoke with him a few years before he died to take his application for Social Security disability benefits. RIP Glenn.
